Fellowship & Assurance

The Core Question

How can you know that you have eternal life?

START STUDY
Background

The Fight for Truth

John wrote this letter late in the first century to combat a dangerous heresy (early Gnosticism) that claimed spirit was good but matter (the body) was evil.
👻

The Lie

"Jesus didn't have a real body. Sin doesn't matter because it's only physical."

🩸

John's Response

"We heard, we saw, we touched Him." (1:1). The Incarnation is real. How we live in the body matters.

Reflection

Do you treat your faith as merely a mental belief, or a tangible reality that affects your physical life?

1 John 1:5-10

Walking in Light

"God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie..."

The Social Test

Claim to

Hate Your
Brother
IMPOSSIBLE

"He remains in darkness"

You cannot love the Father and hate His family. Bitterness blinds us (v.11).

1 John 2:15-17

Do Not Love the World

The "World" isn't nature; it's the system opposed to God. It has three traps:

Lust of the Flesh 🍖

Cravings for physical pleasure outside God's bounds.

Lust of the Eyes 👀

Greed, materialism, and coveting what we see.

Pride of Life 👑

Arrogance about status, wealth, or achievements.

"The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever."

👑

Behold!

"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are."

The Purifying Hope:

If you really believe you are royalty (God's child) and will see Him soon, you won't play in the mud (sin).

Identity drives behavior.

Truth Detector

Not every spiritual sounding thing is from God. We must test them.

Confesses Jesus

Acknowledges Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.

Listens to Apostles

Submits to Biblical authority (v.6).

"Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." (4:4)

1 John 4:18

Fear vs. Love

❤️

Perfect Love

Casts out fear

Why do we fear?

Fear has to do with punishment. If we fear judgment, we haven't fully grasped His love.

"We love because he first loved us."
1 John 5:11-13

You May Know

The Gospel is not a "hope so" guess. It is a "know so" fact based on the Son.
👤
He who has the Son...
⬇️
Has Life.
🚫
He who does not have the Son...
⬇️
Does not have life.
"I write these things to you who believe... that you may know that you have eternal life."

Final Thought

True Christianity shows itself in three ways:

1. Theological: Believing Jesus is God in flesh.
2. Moral: Obeying God's commands.
3. Social: Loving God's people.

"Little children, keep yourselves from idols."
