Conquest & Courage
Study Overview
A 12-part journey on how to possess your promises, fight battles, and leave a legacy.
Deuteronomy 34 -> Joshua 1
Is there a "Moses" (a past leader, method, or season) in your life that has "died," forcing you to step into a new role or season?
Be Strong & Courageous
God repeats "Be strong and courageous" four times in one chapter. Why? Because the task ahead (Giants & Walled Cities) was terrifying.
Joshua 1:8 is the only place in the OT where the word "Success" is used. The condition?
Meditate on the Law day and night.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but obedience in the presence of fear. What command are you hesitating to obey due to fear?
The Scarlet Cord
Prostitute. Gentile. Ancestor of Jesus.
The Israelites had God's law but often lacked faith. Rahab had zero background but risked everything on a rumor of God's power.
God's grace reaches the "lowest" places. Who are you judging that God might be preparing to use for His glory?
The River Jordan
Unlike the Red Sea (which parted before they walked), the Jordan only parted after the priests stepped into the floodwaters.
Faith activates the miracle.
They built a monument at Gilgal. Why? Because humans are prone to amnesia. We forget God's miracles as soon as new problems arise.
What is a "stone of remembrance" in your lifeβa past victory you need to revisit to gain courage for today?
Consecration before Conquest
Before the battle of Jericho, God orders a pause. Two strange things happen:
Renewing the covenant mark.
Remembering redemption.
Joshua asks the Figure with the sword: "Are you for us or our enemies?"
The reply: "Neither. I am the Commander of the Lord's Army."
God doesn't take sides. We take His side.
Are you rushing into battle without stopping to align your heart? Success requires holiness, not just strategy.
The Strategy of Silence
Can you trust God when His methods seem ridiculous? Sometimes God commands silence to ensure the victory is unmistakably His.
The Cost of Hidden Sin
Jericho (a huge city) fell easily. Ai (a tiny village) defeated Israel. Why?
Achan stole gold, silver, and a robe, hiding them under his tent.
"Israel has sinned." God held the whole nation accountable for one man's hidden sin. Our private sins have public consequences.
Is there anything "buried in your tent"? Hidden compromise leads to public defeat. What do you need to confess today?
The Longest Day
"Sun, stand still over Gibeon!"
Joshua needed more daylight to finish the battle. He didn't ask for protection; he asked for a cosmic alteration. God listened.
Are your prayers polite or audacious? Are you asking God to change the environment so you can complete the victory?
Wholly Followed the Lord
"I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me."
Caleb didn't ask for a nice retirement condo by the Jordan. He asked for Hebronβthe place where the giants (Anakim) lived. He wanted to fight the hardest battle at age 85.
Spiritual passion shouldn't fade with age. Are you looking for comfort, or are you still willing to take mountains for God?
Joshua's Final Words
Joshua gathers the elders. He recounts history (Abraham to now). He warns them that God is a jealous God. He demands a decision. Neutrality is not an option.
This choice is daily. Have you made the decision for your "household" (finances, family, future) to serve the Lord exclusively?
